VISIT Cal Poly (Visiting International Students Invited to Cal Poly) stands as a dynamic avenue for international students seeking a rewarding academic and cultural experience in the United States.

Unlike traditional exchange programs, the VISIT Program offers a shorter stay, providing flexibility and access to a wide variety of courses. Students must maintain a required course load to remain eligible, ensuring an immersive academic experience while complying with visa regulations.

VISIT students choose from a wide selection of classes during their term at Cal Poly, tailoring their academic experience to match their goals. Clarissa Wehle, a business administration major from Duale Hochschule Baden-Württemberg (DHBW) in Lörrach, Germany, participated in the VISIT program during fall quarter 2023. Her decision was driven by a desire to gain international exposure and enhance her skills in freight forwarding, transport, and logistics.

“Cal Poly’s focus on hands-on learning and practical experience is reflected in its motto, Learn by Doing,” says Wehle.

Through VISIT, Clarissa aimed to broaden her cultural perspective and language abilities while taking courses not available at her home university, ultimately expanding her expertise in the logistics industry.

To support their academic journey, VISIT students collaborate with their Cal Poly advising center to review course requirements and assignments. The advising team helps ensure course compatibility with the student’s home university, enabling a smooth academic transition.

Clarissa’s journey extended beyond the classroom. She lived with American peers and explored California’s diverse landscapes, beaches, and national parks. After the program, she expressed how the VISIT experience significantly shaped her both personally and professionally—improving her English fluency and boosting skills relevant to today’s competitive global job market.

“Ever since I was a child, I have been fascinated by getting to know other cultures around the world and forming my own picture of the ‘land of unlimited opportunities.’” – Clarissa Wehle

Clarissa’s story reflects the spirit of VISIT—a program committed to preparing global citizens and enriching Cal Poly’s cultural diversity. As VISIT continues to grow, it remains an invaluable platform for students seeking meaningful academic and cultural exploration in the United States.
